Organization of Aggregate Management in the Ontario Government

See the on-line phone book for MNR: http://www.infogo.gov.on.ca/infogo/mainPage.do

As of January 2010, there has been a re-organization of those in MNR responsible for aggregates  (sand, gravel, crushed stone).  Up to that time, there was the Aggregate and Petroleum Resources Section, with Mr. Brian Messerschmidt as manager.  That Section contained MNR’s policy people for aggregates. That Section has disappeared and Mr. Messerschmidt is retiring.

The people from that Section have been moved elsewhere in the MNR hierarchy.  Examples (as of 29 Mar 2010):

Thatcher, Stuart   Senior Policy Adviser, Aggregates - PROGRAM COORDINATION SECTION
Phone: 705-755-1286   Email: stuart.thatcher@ontario.ca

Hollingsworth, Brian   Project Manager, SAROS - LANDS AND NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES SECTION

Phone: 705-755-1271   Email: brian.hollingsworth@ontario.ca

VandenHeuvel, Maria   Policy Advisor, Aggregate Resources - LANDS AND NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES
Phone: 705-755-1375   Email: maria.vandenheuvel@ontario.ca

Besides these people, there are Aggregate Inspectors/Officers responsible for districts that span Ontario. TOARC (The Ontario Aggregate Resources Corporation) has a list of these people at: http://www.toarc.com/contact_mnr_list.asp

The TOARC site also has maps of these districts.

Some of the defacto control of Ontario aggregate pit/quarries has been privatized and handed over to individual pit owners, to TOARC and to MAAP. Both of these last two are owned by OSSGA (previously named APAO) which is the registered lobbyist for the Ontario aggregate industry.

The information given here is from the Telephone Directory of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and from the TOARC web site.
